Behind the Atelier
Keenan Mehrens
Principal Designer & Owner
Raised in the Midwest and shaped by architecture of both past and present, Keenan earned a B.F.A. in Interior Architecture and Design from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, with additional architecture study at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Before founding One Room Atelier in Denver, he spent over a decade designing luxury residential kitchens and baths throughout the Rocky Mountain West that adds up to thousands of client consultations and full-cycle project delivery.
Before interiors, Keenan spent years on the other side of the wall — co-founding and curating DOUBLESPACE, and working as a fine-art handler and installer for Visions West Contemporary and Terry Dowd Inc. That gallery training is still how he looks at a room: composition, scale, negative space, and what a single object is doing in a space, before a single finish gets chosen. It’s a background almost no residential designer shares, and it’s why One Room Atelier reads more like a curated collection than a decorated room.
Architecture, context, and program act as a north star — guiding decisions from reflected ceiling plans and switching diagrams to the provenance of an antique cabinet. That residential foundation shapes everything, and it’s why One Room Atelier approaches small hospitality and commercial projects with the same rigor and collaboration usually reserved for private homes.
Since 2014, Keenan’s portfolio has spanned luxury residential and small hospitality work nationwide, with a particular affinity for luxury residential, turn-of-the-century architecture, and independent cafés, restaurants, and boutique hotels. Clients receive a clear, collaborative process and a hands-off, turn-key result — whether the project is a primary bath, a private residence, a thirty-seat dining room, or intimate chef table.

Above all, we believe it’s a privilege to help shape environments that support modern life and age with grace.

Our Philosophy
At One Room Atelier, we believe that every space — regardless of scale — deserves the same level of care, intention, and refinement. A powder room and a boutique restaurant are not different in importance; they are only different in size.
Equal Attention, Every Scale
We reject the idea that smaller projects receive less rigorous design… Excellence is not reserved for the grand gesture — it is practiced in every detail.
Curation Over Decoration
Design is not about filling a room; it is about selecting what belongs… The result is spaces that feel intentional rather than styled.
Alignment as the Measure of Success
A project succeeds only when it serves the people who will live or work within it… Luxury, to us, is not excess — it is clarity, craftsmanship, and the quiet confidence of a space that fits.
About One Room Atelier
At One Room Atelier, we partner with homeowners, operators, developers, architects, and contractors to bring thoughtfully designed spaces to life… Every room is its own complete commission, held to the same rigor as a project ten times its size.

Welcome to One Room Atelier
One Room Atelier creates luxury residential and small-scale hospitality interiors — private kitchens and baths, independent cafés, wine bars, restaurants, and boutique hotel rooms — that feel personal, material-rich, and thoughtfully resolved.
We typically work with projects in the 500–1,700 sq ft range and don’t take on anything larger than 3,000 sq ft — small enough to give every room full attention, large enough to matter. Our process is thorough yet efficient.
